Relus contacted me sometime back and asked if i could do some cupcakes for her. She had 2 birthday celebrations on the same day and wanted a set of cupcakes with flowers and a cow, with another set with flowers and a rat. The reason for the rat and cow was cos one of the birthday celebrants was born in the year of the Cow and the other in the year of the Rat.

For the mouse, i did them in 3d while for the cow ones, i switched it up a little and did 2d version of the cow’s face on it. I thought they came out quite well and hopefully the birthday celebrants liked the cupcakes too! :)

Rose and sunflower cupcakes

rose and sunflower cupcakes

I recently got a very special request for rose and sunflower cupcakes with the words “Shen Ti Jian Kang” from Hwee Ling. To tell the truth, when i first got Hwee Ling’s request, my first reaction was pure panic! How do you write the words “Jian Kang”!! It was like “Ting Xie” in primary school all over again… oh man.. haha.. i think the last time i wrote anything in mandarin was probably in JC1! Luckily though after calming myself down and thinking for a while, it finally came back to me. Whew!! Think i better start practicing my mandarin soon before i totally lose touch with it :p And to call myself a Chinese too!

To tell the truth, I was consistently bad in my mandarin all the way through school but surprisingly i got an A1 for my mandarin for JC1!!! Yes yes.. i’m bragging but seriously it was just so unbelievable.. even my chinese tutor and school teacher couldn’t believe my results, both thought that i’d probably only get a B3 at best.. so they were understandably stunned when i got my results! To this day i think God had played a huge part in guiding my hand during the written exam and that’s how i got my A1 :) Plus special thanks to an old friend of mine who i think played a big part in improving my spoken mandarin, since we always conversed in mandarin whenever we were together :)

Anyway, to cut a long story short, these were how the cupcakes turned out :) I think my piping has improved quite a bit but let me tell you my hands were shaky when i was piping out the chinese characters on the cake! haha.. my hubby even told me that my chinese writing is quite bad :p haha… i’ve got terrible handwriting i have to admit.. neat but ugly :p But overall i thought the cupcakes turned out quite nicely and i hope Hwee Ling liked them as much as i did… but then again, maybe i’m biased against my own handwriting which i’ve always thought looked ok :)

Sunny sunflower birthday cupcakes

Box of sunflower cupcakes

Yudi called me the other day and asked me if i could do some sunflower cupcakes for his girlfriend’s birthday as his girlfriend loves sunflowers.

I tried scouting around Singapore for some nice sunflower cutters that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg but wasn’t very successful in my search. In the end i had to improvise and ended up using another flower cutter and cutting up each petal in 2 to make additional petals so that it would look like a sunflower.

I thought they tured out quite well considering i had to improvise on my cutter :p I just hope that Yudi’s girlfriend loved the cupcakes as much as i did :)

These sunflower cupcakes were nutella cupcakes with a gooey nutella centre and frosted with a pale green frosting before being topped off with the sunflower. I thought the light green frosting would bring out the yellow of the sunflower and make it pop :)
