Kia Chee e-mailed me quite some time back asking if i could do a Strawberry Shortcake cake for his daughter’s 1st birthday.
This would be one of my greatest challenges and Strawberry Shortcake is an iconic figure.. at least to me.. haha… She’s been around for ages and let’s face it.. all of us as girls have owned a Strawberry Shortcake toy or one of her friends at one time or another. Even now they still have a Strawberry Shortcake cartoon!!
Anyway.. enough about me reminicising about the past…
For Kia Chee’s daughter’s cake, the design was to be a 2 tier cake with a Strawberry shortcake figurine holding hands with a figurine of his little girl – Jitian. Of course, we had to have the words Happy Birthday on the cake right, so that was added on the 2nd tier of the cake.. oh well.. haha.. to save my breath, i think it’ll be easier to show you what the final cake looked like rather than describing it to you
This cake was pretty challenging in terms of the individual stripes i had to do for the top tier of the cake, as well as doing the 3d letters to make them stand vertically on the cake. Added to that, Strawberry Shortcake’s blouse had multi-coloured stripes that had to be individually hand painted on after i had completed making the figurine. That was pretty hard to do and i had to make sure i had a steady hand to ensure that each line was drawn on straight :p

As for the little girl figurine, i realised how a lot of parents like to tie their little girls hair in a little ponytail right on the top of the little girl’s head so i decided to make this little girl figurine with the same type of hairstyle. The parents also wanted the little girl figurine to have her lips pouting out as per the picture they provided me with.. so that’s why the little figurine also had her lips pouting out. Hopefully i managed to capture Jitian’s expression in the picture, in the little figurine of her i did
Happy 1st birthday Jitian, and i hope you had a very Happy Birthday

I got an e-mail from Wee Ling some time back and she wanted to know if i could do a birthday cake for her daughter who was turning 1. As she would be having about 70 people at her party she wanted to know whether i could do a cake large enough to food so many people.
Wee Ling had also done her homework and already knew exactly what design she wanted for the cake plus she even sent me a picture of the cake design she wanted. Wasn’t she great!
With the design of the cake already pre-set, the only thing left was just to discuss whether or not the cake could feed 70 people. After some discussion with Wee Ling, it was decided that other than the 2 tier cake, we would add another 30 simple cupcakes to ensure that there would be enough cake for everyone
This was the final picture of the cake. Sorry for the bad pictures.. i was in a bit of a hurry so didn’t take as much time taking pictures this time round :p I hope the parents and Petra liked the cake. Happy Birthday Petra!!!

Siew Leng contacted me sometime back asking if i could do a Sesame Street cake for her. Rather than doing the usual Sesame Street cake, i suggested to Siew Leng to make it a little different and have the Sesame Street characters racing in cars instead. Siew Leng quickly agreed since her hubby likes race cars as well
As it was to be a small family celebration for Siew Leng, i suggested that she get a 7″ cake which would be enough cake for her family. Due to the size of the cake, I decided to keep the design relatively simple so as not to clutter up the cake. I thought the cake turned out quite well
What do you think

Well.. to start off this post, i just had to say that this past week has been a pretty slow week for me and the continued economic slowdown has been depressing me as well as my cakes apparently.. this was a chocolate cake i baked the other day.. apparently my mood was affecting my baking so that the cake ended up not rising and sinking ever so slightly in the middle… aargggh!!! :( Luckily it was just for us to eat at home so it wasn’t too bad :p

However, the week was soon looking up after I received an e-mail from Ko Chen. Ko Chen had stumbled across my cakes while surfing the net and asked if i could make her daughter’s 1st birthday cake for her. She had loved the pyjama themed cake I made for Valerie and wanted me to make Natalie’s 1st birthday cake for her. She even provided me with a picture of the cake she wanted!! Wow!! I was so impressed since it’s not easy looking after a 1 year old, working and still having to look for cake ideas on the net!!

Anyway after several discussions with her as to whether she should have a 2 tier cake or a 1 tier cake with cupcakes on the side, etc, Ko Chen finally decided on a 9″ cake with a little girl clutching Piglet and some complimenting cupcakes to finish it off. The reason for the Piglet, well it is Natalie’s favourite soft toy and she carries it whereever she goes so of course you had to have it on the topper right?! So after confirming the design with Ko Chen, I immediately started work on the cake topper. As usual I went on a hunt for ideas for a cute little girl topper and one of the first places i searched was to Lorraine McKay of course!!! Her cakes are a constant inspiration to me and I always hope that i would be able to someday make cakes as gorgeous as hers. I’m still a long way off but i think I’m slowly getting better
Guess what! I hit the jackpot on my first try.. Lorraine done a little girl topper that I thought would be perfect.. so using that as a model, i began modelling my own little Natalie clutching Piglet. This topper is, to date, the figurine with the most details I’ve ever attempted, and took me a good 3 days to complete to my satisfaction. So I was actually pretty happy with the way she turned out although i still think i need to improve on the face… :p
Oh and just for fun, i thought i’d show you a picture of how tall the little girl figurine is. That’s a Nivea lip gloss tube next to the little topper, and well.. i’d say she’s about the same size as that topper
As for the cake itself, as I wanted it to look really sweet, and keep in line with Ko Chen’s request for flowers on the cake, I decided to use little flowers all around the border of the cake as well as having a matching border on the top of the cake. This was very time consuming to do as each individual flower had to be positioned on the cake exactly so to get the pattern and effect i wanted. Plus, to give the cake that extra shine, each individual flower had to be dusted with some luster dust to give it that nice glisten in the lights.

However, once everything was assembled i was very happy with the cake. And everything was even more worthwhile when i saw Ko Chen’s delighted expression with the cake I made. As for little Natalie, she was too distracted with my little schnauzer, Jasper, to look at the cake.. haha..
But all in all, seeing Ko Chen’s delight with the cake just made all the time and effort put into the cake worthwhile
Unfortunately for me, stupid little me forgot to take pictures of the little complimenting cupcakes i had made as well… they were on nutella cupcakes with piglet and little girls as toppers. Arrgghh.. Ko Chen do you have any pictures of the little cupcakes to share? :p
