Love is in the air…

Omega watch cupcakes in box

Jennifer called me up the other day after learning about my little blog and cupcake escapades from my cousin. Her request, some cuppies for Valentine’s Day of course :)

What was her request you might ask… well it was the Omega Seamaster which Daniel Craig wore in the most recent James Bond movie… (*007 theme song playing in my head as i type this). Sorry about that but i just can’t help it.. haha.. everytime someone mentions 007 or James Bond, the song just starts humming in my head and it’ll be stuck there for the rest of the night. Here’s a little side note and trivia… did you know that every single James Bond since the very beginning wore an Omega watch?! Some of you might be wacking yourselves on the forehead and going DUH!! but seriously i didn’t know that!!! haha… i guess i’m just a blur blob as my hubby always tells me :)

Anyhow, Jenn’s boyfriend has been eyeing this watch ever since the latest Bond movie came out and since Jenn couldn’t give him the real deal, she decided to go for the next best thing :) A cupcake with an edible imitation of the watch!! Hee hee.. I thought that was so sweet! To ensure that i got the proper glittery strap accurate, I added some silver edible glitter to the strap of the watch.. then to add the finishing touches to the watch, i hand painted on the individual dials, numbers watch hands and of course the Omega insignia :)

Jenn shared some pics of her boyfriends surprised and happy expression when he saw the cuppies… although i can’t share all of them here with you, here are some of the pics she sent me. I’m guessing he loved them.. :) Happy Valentine’s Jenn and David! :)

Customised cupcakes for Valentine’s Day

Janette’s V Day cc

Janette e-mailed me the other day and asked if i could do some customised cupcakes for her. She didn’t provide me much details but her initial request was for me to do a cupcake topper which was a white bear which her boyfriend had given her previously.

After some discussion as to the designs for the other cupcakes, she requested for Eeyore, Dumbo, and a pig, with the remaining cupcakes having a special message to her boyfriend. These were what the final cupcakes looked like :)

Janette looked really excited when she came to collect the cupcakes and hopefully her boyfriend loved them as well as she did :) Happy Valentine’s Day you guys!!! :)

Koi fish and the birthday boy

Koi fish and 1976 man

Janelle e-mailed me some time back asking if i could do some really challenging cupcakes for her… what did she want you might wonder that got me stumped… well it’s actually something really simple.. a bicycle topper for the cupcakes she wanted.. simple enough right many of you might say… well… it actually isn’t.

After thinking long and hard about how i could go about making a 3d bicycle topper for the cupcakes, and making sure that the bicycle doesn’t topple over, i finally realised i couldn’t do it and had to regretfully turn down Janelle’s request as i knew i woldn’t be able to do up a great cupcake for her. However, to my surprise, Janelle came back to me and said that she wouldn’t mind some cupcakes with koi on them instead and a man with the words 1976 written on the shirt. Janelle’s request really made my day and after some research on koi fish and what they look like, i was off making the little figurine and fish for Janelle’s cupcakes.

As to what was behind the theme to Janelle’s cupcakes, well her husband was celebrating his birthday and as he had a passion for koi fish, thus the request for the koi :) I do hope her husband got a nice surprise when he saw the cupcakes and here’s wishing her hubby a very Happy Birthday :)

Birthday cake for Grandpa and Grandson

Close up of grandpa and grandson

I got a call from Cheryl about a week back asking me if i could rush out a cake for her on Wednesday the 11th of February as they were celebrating her father’s and her nephew’s birthday which coincidentally falls on the same day and she wanted a cake with some figurine toppers for them.

Potrait view of grandpa and grandson

As the celebration was going to be a small family one, she didn’t need a big cake and only required a 6″ cake. Her request for the cake design, a topper of her father and her nephew on the top of the cake, and with the words Happy B’day on the side of the cake. As it was a relatively small cake, the topper would take up most of the space on the top of the cake and wouldn’t need any additional accents to make it a gorgeous cake, so i agreed to rush out the cake for her :) It was only when we were chatting that i realised Cheryl was actually a neighbour and lived only 1 or 2 blocks away from me!! What a coincidence!! haha…

grandpa and grandson

Anyway, after receiving a picture that Cheryl sent me of her father and nephew, i quickly set out to make the figurines :) I think i’ve sort of started to get to the stage where i’m comfortable doing figurines for cakes and adding the little touches that hopefully make the figurines look like those in the photo. Don’t get me wrong though, if you ask me, i’ll be the first to admit that i’m no fabulous artist or sculptor who can do a fantastic likeness of the photos provided to me, but i do think the little things like hairstyle or the clothes, do help to personalise the little figurines and create a likeness to the photos :)

I still think i’m a long way off in making my figurines little works of art, but i think i’m slowly getting there.. and for me, all i hope for is that the people who are on the receiving end of these cakes get a nice surprise and a big smile on their face when they see the cake :) Hopefully that’s what happened when Cheryl presented this little cake to her father and son on their birthday :)

Happy family cake for Joanna..

Joanna family cake in boxclose up of joanna and family figurines

Joanna stumbled across my website when she went searching for a way to celebrate her baby’s 1st month. She saw the cake i had done previously for a friend’s 1st month celebration and loved it and hoped that i could squeeze in her order.

After a lot of persuasion on her part, i finally agreed to squeeze it into my schedule. Due to the short notice, i couldn’t do the cradle for her as there wasn’t enough time for the cradle parts to dry before the cake was due. So Joanna asked if i could add in her son and daughter into the cake design instead. I agreed and requested for a picture of their happy family :) haha.. from the picture Joanna sent me, i noticed that her son was quite cheeky, but since it was Cameron’s 1st month celebration, i amended the position of the figurines a little so that Cameron would be the centre of attraction and would have the whole family surrounding him :)

Close up of joanna and family figurines

I decided to leave the cake relatively simple since i wanted Cameron and the other family figurines to be the centre of attraction for the cake. This was the final result. I was really happy with the way the figurines turned out and i thought they looked rather like the photo Joanna had sent me :) What do you think? :)

Hello Kitty cupcakes…

Hello kitty cupcakes

Calvin had seen my Hello Kitty cake on my website and asked if I could do some hello kitty cupcakes for him for Shirley who was a Hello Kitty fan.

I decided to do the Hello Kitty’s in different coloured clothes and as Hello Kitty is so sweet, i decided to do the cupcakes in a very sweet pink base, and added some little red hearts on the cupcakes as well.

I thought the cupcakes turned out fantastic and really really sweet. Calvin seemed really happy and surprised with how the cupcakes turned out as well so i do hope that Shirley liked the cupcakes as well :)

An overseas request for handbag and shoe cupcakes for a daughter’s 30th birthday

handbag and shoe cupcakes take 2

Nina wanted to give a surprise to her daughter as she wasn’t in Singapore to celebrate Emma’s 30th birthday for her. As such, after seeing my blog, she sent me an e-mail asking if i could do some bag and shoe cupcakes for her and include a very special birthday message to Emma to let her daughter know that although they weren’t there in person, they were thinking of her on this special day :)

After discussing with Nina on what bags Emma likes, i found out that Emma had some Mulberry bags and a Chloe bag.. so i did some research and did up 6 cupcakes with bags and another 6 with some shoes and boots :) I do hope that Emma got a nice surprise and that she loved the cupcakes. Happy Birthday Emma!! :)

Koala and piglet cupcake for Yan Ting

Koala and piglet

Yan Ting e-mailed me after stumbling across my website and asked if i could do some cupcakes for her for her boyfriend’s 22nd birthday.

She wanted something very simple with just the words Happy 22 and hearts, plus one very special cupcake with a piglet and koala hugging. I assume the koala and piglet has a special meaning for the 2 of them and i guess the piglet represents Yan Ting while the koala is her boyfriend :) Yan Ting seemed delighted with the cupcakes when she came to pick them up… so i do hope that her boyfriend appreciated the gesture and like it as much as she did :)

A cake for Aunty Ruby…

top down view of aunt ruby’s cake

The 4th of February was my Aunt-in-law’s birthday and i had promised to do up a birthday cake for her for her party. Aunt Ruby is someone who loves singing karaoke and since i’ve known her, has always celebrated her birthday by renting a karaoke room at a community centre and having all her friends over to sing karaoke.

Semi close up of aunt ruby’s cake

Aunt Ruby and her sister’s are not the typical karaoke singers by anyone’s standard. She and her sister’s actually used to be singers and have even acted in a movie show before. Not only that, their oldest sister who unfortunately has passed away had even produced an album before!! So if you are expecting out of tune singing at this gathering, guess again. Every one of Aunt Ruby’s friends are singers who are all armed with powerful voices!

Other than singing karaoke, Aunt Ruby enjoys drinking on her birthday so alcohol is always part of the pary :) So to combine her 2 favourite pastimes of karaoke and drinks, i decide to do a relatively simple cake with Aunt Ruby holding a microphone and singing, with her other hand holding a beer, and of course having some Hennessey bottles and beer cans just around her.  The Hennessey bottle was only about 2 cm in height and was really tiny so painting on the Hennessey name on the bottle was a real challenge considering how tiny it is. The beer cans were another huge challenge as they were even smaller than the bottle and were only about 1cm in height.. yikes!! I was wondering what the hell i was thinking when i realised how tiny the bottles and cans were and that i still had to paint on the words! But in the end, my hand held steady and i thought the they turned out fantastic :)

When my hubby saw the final cake, and took his first look at the figurine, he commented that the figurine actually looked exactly like his Aunt Ruby, down to the spectacles, rosy cheeks and highlights in her hair!! Yay!! Success!! :)

Aunt Ruby was really happy with the cake so that was thanks enough :) The combination of the alcohol and karaoke was spot on and elicited lots of laughs and teasing at the party from Aunt Ruby’s friends who said i made her out to be a “jiu gui” :p… opps.. hee :)
