Yan Xin and Peixin’s cousin’s girlfriend, Wenqi called me the other day asking if i could do a devil and angel themed cake and cupcakes for her 21st birthday. Yan Xin had ordered some birthday cupcakes from me for Peixin the other day so it was great to have an opportunity to make a cake for Wenqi :)
As it was Wenqi’s 21st birthday and hey… everyone only turns 21 right… she wanted a special birthday cake and some cupcakes to go with the cake.
I was super excited when i got the call as this would be my first official cake order for me!! Yay!!

You would think that a devil and angel themed cake should be pretty easy to do right? Wrong!!! Trying to combine both a devil and angel on the cake was quite tough considering that Wenqi didn’t want too big a cake as the cake would be eaten only after a heavy dinner and would only be for about 15-20 “not very hungry people”. So.. doing a 2 tier cake was out of the question, leaving me with the problem of coming up with an idea as to how to combine both the devil and angel on a single cake. :p I decided to surf the net to see if i could find any ideas and whether it would get my creative juices flowing… conclusion… I COULDN’T FIND ANYTHING!!! ARGGHHH…

So after thinking long and hard, i decided the best would be to decorate the cake in 2 halves. A half for the angel theme and the other for the devil themed. As Wenqi also loved my 3d cupcakes she requested for some figurines to go on her cake as well.. so of course i had to do a devil and an angel to go on her cake
As to how to arrange them, well.. i decided to make them sitting with their backs facing each other and decorating the respective side of the cake with their individual themes. For the devil side, i decided to decorate it with some chocolate pebbles and piping on some frosting in red and yellow to resemble fire. The angel side on the other hand would be decorated with some clouds and stars. This way, i could carry through both the stars and clouds to the angel themed cupcakes and the fire frosting to the devil themed cupcakes. So after finalising the cake design with Wenqi.. i excitedly started on the figurines for the cake. To give more dimensions to the stars as well as the figurines, i bought some edible glitter and brushed on the glitters onto the stars, and figurines.. i thought they worked out great and they looked great too!!!

To tell the truth, as this was my first official cake order, there were some moments where i was afraid that there would be some huge unforseen disaster that would cause me to not be able to deliver the cake to Wenqi on time… that would be a total disaster.. and on her birthday too!!! Yikes… i tell you.. i was having nightmares the night before the cake was due worried about all the things that could go wrong!!

Well.. in the end, i did encounter some problems such as my fondant cracking or sticking to the sheet everytime i tried rolling out the fondant large enough to cover the cake.. then the problem of joining the 2 different colours of fondant together that was suppose to represent the devil and angel side of the cake. In the end, i had to throw away my whole fondant and remake a new batch of fodant which luckily it worked out much better.

In the end everything worked out great… although my little pitchforks on the cupcakes did disintegrate due to the high humidity on the day of collection
I think i will have to reinforce my thinner fondant creations in future if i need them to hold firm without support. Sigh.. i hate how the humidity here affects my fondant creations. Wenqi though was super understanding about the humidity problem.. and even though i had to remove the pitchforks from the cupcakes, i think the devil cupcakes were still gorgeous without them. Wenqi was also very happy when she collected the cakes and cupcakes. So overall everything was great.
Happy 21st birthday Wenqi!!! Hope you had a great 21st birthday!!
Oh and for those interested, the cake was a chocolate cake filled and frosted with chocolate buttercream filling then covered in fondant. The angel cupcakes were made with nutella swirled cupcakes and the devil cupcakes were made with my low fat healthy strawberry cupcakes
Here’s a shot of my nutella cupcakes.. don’t they look yummy!

Yan Xin called me up the other day asking whether i could do some assorted design cupcakes for her sister’s birthday as she wanted something “too cute to eat” to present to her sister
After having a discussion over the phone, we finally decided that i would do a batch of chocolate cupcakes for her with 2 tigger, 2 piglet and a dog (as her sister was born in the year of the dog). The remaining other cupcakes would be little bees with flowers..
Once we decided on what toppers she wanted, i quickly got down to work to rush out the toppers for her so that the toppers would be ready in time to present her sister’s birthday… luckily the weather co-operated with us and the toppers were dried in time and ready to go onto the cupcakes 2 days later. After whipping up my favourite chocolate cupcake recipe, i quickly frosted the cupcakes with my favourite grass tip and added the little toppers on top.
Tah-da…. these were the final cupcakes that Yan Xin collected. I like my new plastic boxes which i managed to find… cos now without needing to open the box, you can have clearly see the cute little cupcakes nestled in their box.
The only drawback is that i can only fit 9 cucpakes in there :p

Anyway, here’s a shout out to the birthday girl and i hope that Yan Xin’s surprise was a good one :) Happy Birthday!!!

Firstly i wanted to give a big shout out to Ashley wishing her a Happy Birthday!! And another big cheer for Frances for being so understanding and smiley when i was a in a total panic when i realised what had happened to the cupcakes…Yes.. i hit my first major catastrophe today. Here’s what happened…Frances e-mailed me some time ago asking if i could do some special cupcakes for her as her daughter was turning 4 today. She had in mind a little princess cupcake, and had searched and found a picture of exactly what she wanted and passed it to me asking if i could make such a cupcake for her. The picture was of a little girl sitting on a bright pink base, a white dress and a little flower hairband in her hair. I quickly said no problem and was soon on my way to making the little girls.
The first mini obstacle i faced was the little flower in the girls hairband.. i don’t have a cutter that was that tiny to be able to cut out a flower small enough to fit on the hairband.. but after thinking about it through the night i was being resigned to the idea that i may just have to pipe on the flowers, an idea suddenly came to me while i was in the toilet brushing my teeth! I had some little starry sprinkles that my mom had bought for me the other day.. these would be the perfect substitute for the little flower in the girls hairband!!! I quickly ran out of the toilet and headed straight for the innocous looking bottle of sprinkles sitting on my shelf. Taking out one of the little sprinkles, i rushed back to the little girls to try the star on for size… Voila!!! A perfect fit! Yay!!! I quickly completed adding the little stars to the girls and their hairbands and soon, they were all done. Now all i had to do was bake the cakes, do the frosting and of course make the base for the little girls.
The night before Ashley’s birthday, i quickly baked the cupcakes, added the eyes and eyebrows to the little girls and started on my icing. Humming happily to myself, i started frosting the cupcakes, adding the little base, before using a smidgen of frosting to stick the girl onto the base. When everything was completed.. i was really happy with the end result as they looked so pretty and cute. I quickly packed the girls up in their clear plastic boxes, added the Happy Birthday tag and covered them up. When everything was packed up and ready for Frances collection, it was already close to 2am in the morning. I headed for bed not knowing that disaster was going to strike! When i woke up this morning, i was feeling happy knowing that Frances was getting some really nice cupcakes and about 1/2 hour before she was due, i quickly went to check on the cupcakes one last time to make sure everything was in order. At first glance, everything seemed to be in order until i saw something not quite right with one of the girls.. she was leaning like the Leaning Tower of Pisa!!! AAAHHHHH!!! I quickly opened the box and realised that about 4 other little girls were leaning too!!!
I have to tell you that at that very instant when i realised what had happened i was close to tears and in a panic.. I was running around trying to fix them and quickly called Frances to let her know what had happened.. expecting gasps of horror and possible screaming from her, I was surprised at Frances’s kind, calm and cheery disposition while i was telling her of the disaster on my hands. Unfortunately as the cupcakes were needed by 12, i could only come up with quick fix solutions to solve the cupcake problems… i thought the best solution would be to remove the girls from the base add some additional swirls of icing onto the cupcake and popping the girls back on the top of the cupcake as a topper, or foregoing the topper altogether and just have swirls of icing with cheery sprinkles on it. However, when Frances arrived, she took one look at the cupcakes and reassured me that the cupcakes looked great and that their leaning wasn’t all that noticeable anyway. Wasn’t she nice!!! After apologising repeatedly for the leaning girls, Frances left with the cupcakes and headed off to Ashley’s school to present her and her classmates with the cupcakes.
As i was still worried about the cupcakes, i messaged Frances once again to just check if all the cupcakes arrived safely and was delighted to hear that everything was perfect and that the kids and teachers loved the cupcakes!! Whew… i breathed a huge sigh of relief when i heard that. Luckily everything worked out fine and the most important thing was that the birthday girl was happy
Thanks once again Frances for being so wonderful about the leaning girls… and here’s wishing Ashley a very Happy 4th Birthday. As for the lesson i took home from this scare, to make sure that i add a little stick to my figurines in the future so that i could make sure that they will remain upright :p

Zhenwei e-mailed me the other day asking if it was possible for me to do some Happy Birthday cupcakes for him. As he liked the cupcakes with the Happy Birthday spelt out on the individual cupcakes similar to my earlier post, he asked if i could do some cupcakes like that for him.. in addition, he asked if i could do 2 poohs, 2 schnauzers and a tigger for him.
I decided to do something different to the Happy Birthday letters by trying to make it look more 3 dimensional by adding a lighter shawdow under each letter… and by adding a 2 toned frosting to the cupcakes.. not sure if you can see it in the picture below.. but i thought it turned out quite pretty :)

I didn’t have enough time to take any nice pics… so only managed to grab these 2 quick photos before Zhen Wei came to collect the cupcakes :p
